horizontal power
Principal artistic responsibility in the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra rests not with a chief conductor but with the Artistic Board. This model is rare among orchestras, being found in only a few chamber ensemble sized orchestras in the world.

Since 2001, artistic policy for the orchestra has been in the hands of the Artistic Board, which is responsible for programming and artistic development. The Board picks out concert programmes, guest conductors and guest soloists and puts them into a proposal submitted to the Repertoire Committee. The members of the Artistic Board are the General Manager Juha Ahonen and two musicians elected by the orchestra members. In the 2018–2019 season, they are Timo Holopainen, 2nd Violin and Deputy Principal Double Bass Mikko Kujanpää.
